Background of <\/strong><\/a>CJPC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0<\/strong>The Second Vatican Council instilled a concern for the world in the church.\u00a0 Consequently, Pope Paul VI established the Pontifical Justice and Peace Commission Justicia et Pax\u2019 on 6th January 1967. \u201cTaking into account immensity the hardships which still afflict a large section of humanity, and with a view to fostering everywhere the justice and\u00a0 love of Christ for the poor, the council suggested that\u00a0 it would be\u00a0 most\u00a0 opportune to\u00a0 create some organization of the universal church whose task would be\u00a0 to arouse\u00a0 the Catholic community to promote the progress of\u00a0 areas which are\u00a0 in\u00a0 want and foster social Justice\u00a0 between nations. After ten years\u2019 period, Paul VI gave the commission its definite on 10th December 1976 and in 1988, Pope John Paul II changed its title from Pontifical Commission to a Pontifical Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Kenya we still\nuse the term Catholic justice and Peace Commission (CJPC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Objectives and Mandate of the Pontifical Council for Justice and <\/strong><\/a>Peace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 <\/strong>Pastor Bonus, the Apostolic Constitution of 1998, defined the objectives and mandate to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace in the following   terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The council will promote Justice and peace in the world, in the light of the Gospel and of the social teachings of the church.<\/li>
  2. It will deepen the social doctrine of the church and attempt to make it widely known and\u00a0 applied, both by\u00a0 individuals\u00a0 and\u00a0 communities\u00a0 especially\u00a0 as\u00a0 regards\u00a0 relations\u00a0 between workers and employers. These relations should be increasingly marked by the spirit of the Gospel.<\/li>
  3. It will assemble\u00a0 and\u00a0 evaluate research of\u00a0 issues related\u00a0 to\u00a0 Justice\u00a0 and\u00a0 Peace,\u00a0 development\u00a0 of people and violation of\u00a0 human rights. When appropriate, it will inform the local ordinary for Episcopal conclusions.<\/li>
  4. \u00a0It will foster relations with all organizations that are sincerely committed to the promotion of values of Justice and Peace in the world, whether they are Catholics or not.<\/li>
  5. It will heighten awareness of the need to promote peace above all on the occasion of World Day of Peace.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Activities of the Pontifical Council for Justice and <\/strong><\/a>Peace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Justice:<\/strong><\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace is concerned with everything that touches upon social Justice including work conditions, international justice issues and problems associated with development, especially its social dimension. The council also promotes ethical reflection on economic and financial systems, including their impact on the environment, and the ever changing forms (terrorism, piracy, radicalization, exaggerated nationalism etc.).\u00a0 It also considers the question of political systems and the role of Catholics in the political arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
