The Feast Day of St. Veronica is ~ July 12th<\/h3>\n

Saint Veronica<\/b>\u00a0was a woman of\u00a0Jerusalem\u00a0in the first century AD, according to\u00a0Catholic tradition.\u00a0A celebrated saint in many pious Christian countries\u00a0the\u00a0Acta sanctorum\u00a0published by the\u00a0Bollandists\u00a0listed her feast under July 12, but the German\u00a0Jesuit\u00a0scholar Joseph Braun cited her commemoration in\u00a0Festi Marianni\u00a0on 13 January.<\/p>\n

According to Church tradition, Veronica was moved with sympathy when she saw\u00a0Jesus\u00a0carrying his cross to Golgotha and gave him her veil that he might wipe his forehead. Jesus accepted the offering, held it to his face, and then handed it back to her\u2014the image of his face miraculously impressed upon it. This piece of cloth became known as the\u00a0‘Veil of Veronica’.<\/sup><\/p>\n

The name “Veronica” itself is a Latinisation of\u00a0Berenice (greek)\u00a0meaning\u00a0“<\/i>bearer of victory“<\/i>. The woman who offered her veil to Jesus was known by this name in the\u00a0Byzantine\u00a0East, but in the\u00a0Latin\u00a0West the name took a life of its own. As proven by a medieval text, “Veronica” was used by the 13th century as a designation for a relic venerated in Rome as the true image of Jesus. Since the\u00a0Latin\u00a0word for “true” or “authentic” happens to be\u00a0vera, the theory emerged that the name itself is derived from the Latin phrase “true image”,\u00a0vera icon<\/i>\u00a0(one Latin word for\u00a0image<\/i>\u00a0is\u00a0icon<\/i>, derived from\u00a0Greek:\u00a0\u03b5\u03b9\u03ba\u03cc\u03bd\u03b1<\/span>,\u00a0eikona). In the 13th-century text and also in some later sources the term Veronica was used for the veil, not the person, but for centuries it has been better known as the name of the woman. The claim that the name Veronica is derived from\u00a0vera\u00a0\u00a0proved to be very persistent and we encounter it until today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
